About Qawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufis [I]

Qawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufis [I] is a studio album by Pakistani qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The release marks one of his early international recordings dedicated to the Sufi devotional music tradition of qawwali. The album appeared under the JVC label and debuted on March 21, 1990 in CD format.

The album features four tracks that showcase Khan’s signature vocal technique and the ensemble performance style of his qawwali party. The opening track Nami-Danam exemplifies the fusion of Persian poetic influences with the rhythmic and melodic structures of qawwali. Allah Muhammad Char Yar follows as a devotional composition centered on Islamic spiritual themes. Data sahab de daware pays homage to the Sufi saint Ali Hajveri, commonly known as Data Ganj Bakhsh, while Yadan vichhri sajan diyan explores themes of longing and divine love through Punjabi verse.

Khan’s performance on the album retains the traditional qawwali framework, incorporating harmonium, tabla, and chorus responses. The recording session details and additional personnel remain partially undocumented, though the album aligns with his broader discography of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The release contributed to the global dissemination of qawwali beyond South Asia, preceding Khan’s later collaborations with international artists.

The 1990 edition by JVC formed part of a series intended to introduce classical and devotional music traditions to a wider audience. No subsequent reissues or expanded versions of this specific volume have been officially confirmed. The album’s tracklist and production credits reflect the period’s standard qawwali recording practices, with Khan as the primary composer and lead vocalist.
