About Nilaya
Nilaya is a studio album by Indian classical vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar. The album features performances in the Khayal and Taranah styles of Hindustani classical music. Sense World Music released the recording on CD in 2007.
Kashalkar presents two ragas across six tracks. The album opens with a detailed exploration of Raga Malkauns, beginning with an Alap that establishes the raga’s melodic framework. The performance progresses into a Vilambit Khayal in two segments, followed by a Taranah that showcases rhythmic intricacy and improvisational phrasing. The second half of the album shifts to Raga Lalit Pancham, featuring a Bandish set in Jhaptaal and concluding with a second Taranah composition.
The recording captures Kashalkar’s interpretation of the Gwalior gharana and Jaipur-Atrauli gharana traditions, emphasizing vocal agility and emotive depth. The accompaniment details remain undocumented in available sources, though the album adheres to the conventional ensemble format of Hindustani classical performances, likely including tanpura drone and tabla percussion.
Nilaya serves as a representative example of Kashalkar’s mid-career work, released during a period when he actively performed and recorded traditional repertoire. The album’s production quality and track sequencing reflect the standards of Sense World Music’s classical catalog during the 2000s. No live recordings or alternate versions of these performances have been confirmed in public records.
