About Kathak
Kathak is a studio album by Indian percussionist and composer Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu released the album in 1998 under Cream Records as a CD format production. The recording represents a fusion of Indian classical rhythms with jazz, world music and electronic elements, consistent with Gurtu’s cross-genre approach.
Gurtu composed and arranged the seven tracks on the album. The title track Kathak references the North Indian classical dance form, integrating rhythmic patterns associated with the tradition. Other notable compositions include Ganapati, which draws from devotional themes linked to the Hindu deity Ganesha, and Brazilian, blending Latin percussion with Gurtu’s tabla-derived techniques. The track You features layered vocal textures alongside percussion, while Seven Brings Return employs an asymmetrical 7/4 time signature. Shunyai and Who Knows the Mind incorporate ambient soundscapes with traditional Indian instruments.
The album’s production involved collaboration with session musicians, though specific contributor details remain partially undocumented.
