About Crazy Saints
Crazy Saints is a studio album by Indian percussionist and composer Trilok Gurtu. Released in 1993, the album represents a fusion of Indian classical traditions with jazz, world music and avant-garde experimentation. Gurtu composed the majority of the material and performed on percussion, drums and konnakol, accompanied by a rotating ensemble of international musicians.
The album contains seven tracks. Manini opens the record with a rhythmic interplay between Gurtu’s percussion and layered synth textures. Tillana draws from Carnatic music structures, featuring rapid konnakol vocalizations and intricate drum patterns. Ballad for 2 Musicians shifts to a sparse, atmospheric collaboration between Gurtu and an unidentified pianist, emphasizing space and dynamic contrast. The Other Tune introduces electronic elements alongside acoustic percussion, while Blessing in Disguise incorporates melodic motifs from North Indian classical music.
The title track Crazy Saints serves as the album’s centerpiece, blending devotional themes with polyrhythmic percussion and improvised sections. No Discrimination concludes the record with a groove-oriented piece that merges funk-inflected basslines with Gurtu’s percussive virtuosity. The production integrates live recordings with studio overdubs, though specific session details and contributing artists beyond Gurtu remain partially undocumented in available sources.
Crammed Discs issued the album on CD and vinyl formats in 1993.
