About JOY!Guru
JOY!Guru is a collaborative studio album by Indian slide guitarist and composer Debashish Bhattacharya, Polish saxophonist and composer Wojciech Traczyk, and percussionist Hubert Zemler. The trio released the album on November 30, 2018 as a digital media project under an official label, though the specific record label remains undocumented in available sources.
The album merges elements of Indian classical music with contemporary jazz and experimental improvisation. Bhattacharya contributed slide guitar performances, including his custom-designed instruments such as the chaturangui, a 22-stringed hybrid guitar-sitar. Traczyk provided saxophone and electronic wind instrument textures, while Zemler incorporated percussion and drum kit arrangements. The recording sessions integrated live improvisation with structured compositions, reflecting the artists’ cross-cultural exchange.
JOY!Guru comprises seven tracks with a total runtime of approximately 45 minutes. Notable compositions include Here Comes the Moon King, an opening piece blending raga-inspired melodies with jazz harmonies, and Chaturangui Express, a rhythmically driven track showcasing Bhattacharya’s slide techniques. Midnight Raga explores nocturnal thematic motifs through extended improvisational passages, while Red Moon over Warsaw incorporates Eastern European tonal influences. Other tracks such as Night Rider, Alice, and From Hawaii with Love further diversify the album’s stylistic range, though detailed compositional backgrounds for these works remain partially undocumented.
The project emerged from a series of live performances and studio experiments between 2016 and 2018, culminating in the 2018 release. Critical reception highlighted the album’s fusion of traditional Indian scales with avant-garde jazz, though no formal chart placements or commercial performance metrics are publicly recorded. The artists promoted the release through select concerts in Europe and India, emphasizing its role as an exploratory work within contemporary world music.
