About Conversations
Conversations is a collaborative studio album by Indian violinist L. Subramaniam and French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. The album released in 1984 under the Milestone label in CD format. It features eight original compositions that blend Carnatic classical traditions with Western jazz and improvisational styles.
The recording sessions brought together Subramaniam’s expertise in South Indian classical music and Grappelli’s background in European jazz. Subramaniam composed the majority of the tracks, while Grappelli contributed arrangements and improvisational segments. The album’s title reflects the dialogic interplay between the two violinists, emphasizing spontaneous musical exchanges.
The tracklist includes Don’t Leave Me, a fusion piece combining Carnatic ragas with jazz harmonies, and Memories, a slower, melodic composition showcasing Grappelli’s lyrical phrasing. Paganini Caprice 5 adapts Niccolò Paganini’s classical work with improvisational elements from both artists. Conversation serves as the centerpiece, featuring extended call-and-response passages between the violinists. Other tracks include Walking In A Dream, Illusion, Tribute To Mani (a homage to Subramaniam’s late brother, violinist T.N. Krishnan’s accompanist), and French Resolution, which incorporates Gypsy jazz influences.
The album’s production integrated acoustic recording techniques to capture the natural resonance of the violins. Subramaniam performed on a custom seven-string violin, while Grappelli used his signature electric violin for select tracks. The accompanying musicians included a rhythm section of bass and percussion, though specific session details remain partially undocumented.
Conversations received attention for its cross-cultural experimentation, though commercial reception data from 1984 is limited. The album remains a notable example of East-West fusion in instrumental music, highlighting the technical and expressive range of both artists. Reissues or remastered editions have not been officially confirmed as of the latest available records.
