The Beat of Love

The Beat of Love is a studio album by Indian percussionist and composer Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu released the album on June 12, 2001, through Blue Thumb Records. The work marked his continued fusion of Indian classical rhythms with global jazz, world music and electronic elements. The album adopted a CD format and contained eleven original tracks.

Gurtu composed and arranged the material with contributions from collaborating musicians. The recording sessions featured a blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, including tabla, drums, keyboards, bass and traditional Indian strings. Notable tracks included Maya, an intricate rhythmic exploration; A Friend, a melodic piece with layered percussion; and The Beat of Love, the title track combining konnakol vocal rhythms with synth textures. Other compositions such as Jhulelal drew from Sufi and folk traditions, while Ingoma incorporated African percussive influences. The closing track, Peace of the Five Elements, integrated ambient soundscapes with meditative tabla patterns.

The album’s production emphasized live improvisation alongside structured arrangements. Gurtu performed primary percussion duties and provided lead vocals on select tracks. Guest artists contributed guitar, saxophone, violin and backing vocals, though the full personnel list remains partially undocumented in available sources. Blue Thumb Records distributed the release in North America and Europe, with subsequent reissues in Asian markets.

Critics noted the album’s synthesis of traditional Indian music with contemporary production techniques. The track Ola Bombay became a minor highlight for its urban fusion style, while Dance With My Lover showcased Gurtu’s ability to merge dance rhythms with classical Indian phrasing. The context of the 2001 release positioned the work within Gurtu’s broader discography, which included prior collaborations with artists such as John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek.
