About Melodies Of Romance
Melodies of Romance is an Indian classical music album by santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma. The album was released on January 1, 1983. It features instrumental performances on the santoor, a traditional hammered dulcimer from the Kashmir region of India.
Shivkumar Sharma recorded Melodies of Romance as a solo album. The release comprises three tracks, each based on distinct ragas and rhythmic cycles. The first track, "Raga Pahadi: Tritaal," presents Pahadi, a light classical raga associated with the mountainous regions of northern India, set to Tritaal, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle. The second track, "Raga Mishra Shivaranjani: Taal Deepchandi," combines elements of Shivaranjani with other melodic phrases, performed in Deepchandi, a 14-beat cycle. The third track, "Raga Bhairavin: Taal Dadra," explores Bhairavin, a variant of the morning raga Bhairav, in Dadra, a 6-beat rhythm.
The album does not specify a record label. The compositions highlight Sharma’s technical precision and improvisational style on the santoor. Melodies of Romance remains a notable work in Sharma’s discography for its exploration of romantic and devotional themes through classical ragas.
