The Sitar for Mental Health series, founded by sitar virtuoso Rishab Rikhiram Sharma in 2020, is a groundbreaking cultural initiative that bridges the gap between traditional Indian classical music and modern wellness. Born from Sharma’s personal journey with anxiety and depression, the series has evolved into a global movement aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health through immersive musical experiences.

Unlike traditional concerts, these sessions are structured as multi-sensory journeys designed for deep reflection and relaxation. A typical 120-minute session includes:

  • Guided Mindfulness: The event often begins with guided breathwork and meditation to help the audience transition into a receptive state.
  • Aural Immersion: Sharma blends the resonant acoustic tones of the sitar with contemporary soundscapes, including electronic textures and instruments like sound bowls, the khartal, and daf.
  • Open Dialogue: Between musical segments, Sharma shares personal insights about his mental health journey, encouraging the audience to prioritise self-care and seek professional support when needed.
  • Thematic Compositions: The setlist typically features evocative pieces such as "Chanakya," "The Burning Ghat," and his popular rendition of "Shiv Kailash," all played with a focus on raga therapy and emotional release.

The series leverages the therapeutic potential of Indian classical music—specifically the concept of Raga Therapy. The long, sustained notes of the sitar and the rhythmic structure of certain ragas are used to lower cortisol levels and induce a meditative state. By performing in modern venues and adopting a contemporary aesthetic (including his signature mehendi-adorned hands), Sharma has successfully introduced these ancient healing practices to millennials and Gen Z.

Following the success of his international tours, Rishab Rikhiram Sharma has announced a major 10-city tour of India for 2026. Presented by Kotak Solitaire and produced by Team Innovation.
