Yashwant Vaishnav

Yashwant Vaishnav is a remarkable tabla artist known for his expressive playing and deep understanding of rhythm. He believes that tabla is a language and that its beauty becomes clearer when explained through images and ideas. For him, rhythms can suggest the movement of a deer, the sound of rain, or even a conversation between two voices. This approach helps audiences connect with the music beyond technique.

His musical journey began at the age of three under the guidance of his father, Shri Rajendra Vaishnav. From childhood, discipline became part of daily life. Early morning riyaz and long hours of practice shaped his focus and commitment. Later, he trained for many years with Dr. Hemant Sachdeva and Pandit Mukund Bhale, and he is now a disciple of Pandit Yogesh Samsi.

Alongside traditional training, Yashwant has pursued academic study in music. He completed his master’s degree in Tabla from Indrakala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya and is currently working towards a PhD in the subject. For him, learning never ends. He believes that true knowledge in music grows deeper with humility and constant effort.

Yashwant is a recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Bal Shree Award. His performances are marked by clarity, imagination, and balance between power and sensitivity.

At the Darbar Festival, he performed in several collaborations, accompanying vocalists Sanskrati and Prakriti Wahane, appearing with young santoor player Eeshar Singh, and presenting an instrumental dialogue with sarod artist Rajrupa Chowdhury. In each setting, he brought depth and freshness, showing his ability to support melody while shaping rhythm with purpose.
