Waseem Ahmed Khan

Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan is a preeminent vocalist and a torchbearer of the Agra Gharana. Born in 1974 into a family of legendary musicians, he represents the 17th generation of a lineage that includes stalwarts such as Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan. His musical foundation was laid at age six by his maternal grandfather, the celebrated composer Ustad Ata Hussain Khan, known by the pen name "Ratan Piya". He refined his artistry under the guidance of his father, Ustad Naseem Ahmed Khan, and his grand-uncle, Ustad Shafi Ahmed Khan, as a scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. 

Ustad Waseem’s singing stands as a masterclass in the authentic Agra style, characterised by a powerful, open-throated delivery and a distinct mix of Dhrupad and Khayal. He is famous for his command over the Nom-Tom Alap, a rhythmic and sonorous introductory phase, and Bol-Bant, the elaborate rhythmic improvisation of lyrics. The singer's voice has the rare gravitas for heavy classical forms and the emotional delicacy needed for Thumri and Dadra. This range has earned him considerable acclaim across major global platforms, including the Dover Lane Music Conference, Darbar Festival in London, and the Aga Khan Museum. 

Beyond his solo career, Ustad Waseem is an acclaimed educator and custodian of tradition. He served as a senior faculty member at the Shakhri Begum Memorial Trust and is now a Musician Tutor at ITC-SRA, where he mentors the next generation of classical vocalists in the Guru-Shishya tradition. His work has been recognised with accolades including the Patliputra Kala Sambardhak Samman and the Rising Sun of Music award. For Waseem, music is still a spiritual pursuit and a duty to preserve a 13th-century inheritance while making sure it connects with present-day audiences.
