Venkatesh Godkhindi

Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi (1940–2015) was a Hindustani classical vocalist and bansuri (flute) artist associated with the Kirana gharana. Known for his Gayaki Ang approach, he adapted vocal nuances into instrumental performance, emphasizing clarity of notes and melodic expression within raga-based music.

A self-trained musician, he achieved recognition as an A-grade artist in both vocal and flute at All India Radio. He introduced an additional thumb hole in the bansuri to enhance tonal precision, a technical innovation that supported his expressive style. His career included long service as a staff artist at AIR across multiple cities, including Dharwad, Delhi, and Mangalore.

Beyond performance, he contributed significantly to music education by founding the Sanjog Bansuri Mahavidyalaya in Bengaluru, training numerous students in Hindustani music. He was part of a continuing musical lineage, performing alongside his son Pt. Pravin Godkhindi and grandson Shadaj Godkhindi, sustaining a multi-generational contribution to Indian classical music.
