T.H. Subashchandran

T. H. Subash Chandran (Thetakudi Harihara Subash Chandran) was a South Indian percussion maestro, born on 25 April 1946 in Chennai, India, and passed away on 5 June 2020. He was widely respected as a multi-percussionist, composer, and teacher in Carnatic music. He belonged to a rich musical lineage and learned percussion from his father T. R. Harihara Sharma, continuing a strong classical tradition. 

Subash Chandran was known for mastering multiple instruments such as mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, morsing, and especially konnakol (vocal percussion). He was considered one of the greatest modern exponents of konnakol, a rare and highly skilled rhythmic art form. His performances were admired for their precision, creativity, and deep rhythmic understanding, making him a unique figure in Indian classical percussion. 

He gained international fame through performances across the world, including appearances at the United Nations and major festivals in the USA, Russia, Japan, and Europe. He collaborated with global orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and worked alongside legendary artists like M. S. Subbulakshmi,M.Balamuralikrishna, and L. Subramaniam. His work also bridged Indian classical music with jazz and Western traditions. 

Apart from performing, he made significant contributions as a teacher and educator. He served as a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts and later became a professor emeritus at the Sankara Institute of Percussive Arts in the USA. Through workshops and teaching worldwide, he trained many students who went on to become professional musicians and educators. 

Overall, T. H. Subash Chandran is remembered as a visionary artist who elevated South Indian percussion to global recognition. His mastery of rhythm, dedication to teaching, and innovations in konnakol have left a lasting legacy in the world of Indian classical music.
