Biography
Tanmoy Bose occupies a distinctive place in Indian classical music as a tabla player whose work spans concert performance, rhythmic research, and world-music innovation. Growing up in Kolkata, he trained under respected teachers, including Pandit Maharaj Banerjee, Pandit Mantu Banerjee, and later under tabla gurus Pandit Kanai Dutta and Pandit Shankar Ghosh. This background shaped his understanding of both melodic and rhythmic structures, contributing to his versatility across classical and collaborative settings.
His association with Pandit Ravi Shankar played a central role in bringing Bose to international prominence. He has performed at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the Berlin Philharmonie, appearing in concerts that introduced Indian classical music to new global audiences. His recording credits include Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated releases with Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar.
Bose has developed several creative projects that explore new contexts for percussion, including Taal Tantra Experience, Baul & Beyond, Dhwani, Chaturang, and Drumz Dreamz. These initiatives integrate Indian classical rhythms with jazz, folk drumming, and community-based performance practices. He has also contributed music to films, television, and theater.
Awards such as the Sangeet Mahasamman and recognition within West Bengal’s cultural sphere highlight his continued importance as a performer and educator. Through concerts, collaborations, and mentorship, Tanmoy Bose contributes to sustaining the tabla tradition while encouraging contemporary and international artistic exchange.
