Biography

T. M. Krishna is one of the most influential voices in contemporary Indian classical music. Emerging as a young talent in the 1990s, he has consistently pursued a rigorous and reflective approach to Carnatic music. His training under eminent gurus B. Seetharama Sarma, Chengalpet Ranganathan, and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer shaped a strong classical foundation that remains central to his practice.

Krishna's music is strongly rooted in tradition, and it also explores how classical music can evolve and reach more people. In his concerts, he explores ragas deeply while trying new ways of presenting music. He performs in both traditional concert halls and open public venues, allowing people from different backgrounds to connect with his music.

His writing and advocacy extend this artistic inquiry into society. A Southern Music, Reshaping Art, and Sebastian and Sons explore how music is linked to society, touching on issues like caste, class, and the people who make musical instruments. He also writes regular articles and speaks at universities and cultural events, encouraging open conversations about art, equality, and democracy.

Krishna collaborates with diverse artistic communities, including Jogappas (transgender musicians), gaana artists, poets, and environmental activists. His efforts to connect art with public life have led to initiatives such as the Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha and The Edict Project.

He has been honoured with highly recognised awards such as the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2016), the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (2017), and the Sangita Kalanidhi (2025). He reflects on the role of art in a changing world and works to make it more open and inclusive. By respecting tradition and still challenging its limits, he keeps classical music connected to the present.
