About
Biography
Susmita Chakraborty is an Indian vocalist, composer, and educator associated with Hindustani classical and semi-classical music. Based in Kolkata, she is the co-founder and co-artistic director of SwarDarbar, a music institution where she is actively involved as a teacher and mentor. Her work reflects a balance between performance, composition, and pedagogy.
Her repertoire spans khayal, thumri, dadra, and ghazals, along with devotional and light-classical forms such as bhajans, Shyama Sangeet, and Najrul Geeti. She also performs Rabindra Sangeet and creates original Bengali songs, particularly in the romantic and seasonal genres. Several of her singles—including Tumi Jodi Pakhi Hao, Man Mohan Kanha, Khushi Jhilmil, and later releases like Barshar Dupure, Bolle Tumi, and Ghum Asena—have been released on major streaming platforms.
Originally trained in zoology at the postgraduate level, she later chose music as a full-time profession. Her formative training includes a decade of study under Tandra Ghoshal, followed by advanced guidance from Pt. Jayanta Bose and Vidushi Suranjana Bose. She also received instruction in modern Bengali songs from Haimanti Shukla. Through concerts, recordings, and teaching, she continues to contribute to Kolkata’s classical and semi-classical music scene.
