Sumit Mishra

Sumit Mishra belongs to a distinguished Banaras Gharana family with an unbroken musical heritage spanning more than ten generations, where every member has been deeply engaged in music, and several have emerged as icons in their respective fields. He commenced his musical journey under the guidance of his father, Pandit Sohan Lal Mishra, and his uncle, Pandit Mohan Lal Mishra, absorbing the traditional values and stylistic depth of the gharana. His great-grandfather, Pandit Bundi Maharaj, was a renowned tabla maestro, while his grandfather, Pandit Damodar Mishra, was celebrated for his powerful voice and refined presentation of ragas in vocal music.

A commerce graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, Sumit Mishra has also excelled academically and received multiple awards at cultural festivals. His career reached a significant milestone when he began accompanying Padma Vibhushan Pandit Rajan-Sajan Mishra, followed by regular performances with Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi and other eminent stalwarts of Indian classical music. He has performed at major festivals, including Sankat Mochan, Saptak, Dover Lane, ITC Sangeet Sammelan, Ganga Mahotsav, Taj Mahotsav, Haridas Sangeet Sammelan, and several others.

In addition to performance, Sumit Mishra is actively engaged in teaching and offers training in vocal music, harmonium, keyboard, rhythm, and voice modulation. His pedagogy covers classical forms such as raga, ragini, sargam, palta, bhajan, ghazal, and geet, while also exploring the relationship between Indian classical and Bollywood music. Classes are conducted through both online and offline modes using platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet.
