Biography

Sudhir Nayak is a senior harmonium exponent in Hindustani classical music, trained under the legendary Pandit Tulsidas Borkar and the renowned vocalist-composer Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. His musicianship reflects a rare balance of melodic sensitivity, tonal clarity, and deep understanding of raga-based forms. Equally respected as a soloist and accompanist, he is known for enhancing vocal and instrumental performances through refined phrasing and structural awareness.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Sudhir Nayak has accompanied many of India’s foremost musicians, including Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Gangubai Hangal, Dr. Prabha Atre, Shobha Gurtu, Birju Maharaj, and several leading contemporary artists. His performances are regularly featured on Indian television, radio, and commercial recordings, and he has appeared extensively across Europe, North America, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East.

He has performed at major international platforms such as the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Perth Arts Festival, Melbourne Festival, and Sacred Music Festival in Brisbane. A landmark moment in his career was performing with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi at the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of India’s Independence.

Beyond performance, Sudhir Nayak is an active composer and collaborator in theater, recordings, and cross-cultural projects. He is deeply committed to the development and preservation of the harmonium. He curated an exhibition of antique harmoniums from his personal collection at the Baajaa Gaajaa festival, presenting the instrument’s historical and cultural journey. This collection is now envisioned as part of the Harmonium Museum at Kala Coast: Global Music & Arts Village in coastal Karnataka.

An influential educator, he conducts workshops and lecture-demonstrations internationally and has served as a visiting lecturer at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, and Griffith University. He currently teaches harmonium at the University of Mumbai. With numerous national honors to his credit, Sudhir Nayak continues to shape contemporary harmonium practice through performance, pedagogy, and sustained artistic inquiry.
