Biography

Gangubai Hangal was born on March 5, 1913, in Hangal, Karnataka, and later became closely associated with the Dharwad region, which significantly shaped her musical identity. She grew up in a modest household, where her mother, a Carnatic music singer, introduced her to the world of classical music. With limited formal education and in an era when public performance by women was socially discouraged, Gangubai Hangal’s decision to pursue music required exceptional resolve.

Her formal training in Hindustani classical music began under Krishnacharya Hulgur and Dattopant Desai, before she received intensive and transformative guidance from Sawai Gandharva. This training established her as a leading exponent of the Kirana gharana, known for its emphasis on swara purity and disciplined raga development. Over time, she chose to sing only khayal, distancing herself from lighter classical forms and focusing entirely on raga-based elaboration.

Gangubai Hangal toured widely across India, performing at major concert platforms and broadcasting regularly on All India Radio until the mid-20th century. She also contributed to music education as an honorary professor at Karnataka University, supporting the transmission of classical knowledge through formal and traditional systems.

Her long and influential career was recognized with numerous honors, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. Gangubai Hangal passed away on 21 July 2009 in Hubli, Karnataka. Her legacy endures through institutions, recordings, and generations of vocalists inspired by her uncompromising dedication to Hindustani classical music.
