Suchismita Chatterjee
About
Biography
Suchismita Chatterjee is a distinguished Hindustani classical flautist, internationally recognized as one half of The Flute Sisters (Suchismita and Debopriya Chatterjee). Born in Allahabad into a well-known musical family, she grew up in an environment where music shaped daily life. Her parents, Prof. Robin Chatterjee and Smt. Krishna Chatterjee, both classical vocalist and composer, encouraged their daughters to pursue the bansuri, laying the foundation for a lifelong artistic journey.
Her initial training in flute began under the guidance of the late Pandit Bholanath Prasanna. During her formative years, she came under the tutelage of Padmavibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the foremost exponent of the Maihar–Senia gharana. Under his guidance, Suchismita absorbed not only technical refinement but also the discipline, depth, and philosophy of the guru-shishya parampara. This training firmly anchored her in the lineage of Baba Allauddin Khan and Smt. Annapurna Devi.
Suchismita pursued structured musical education in both Indian and Western traditions. She was awarded the Nuffic Scholarship by the Indian Embassy in the Netherlands and studied world music at the Rotterdam Conservatory, earning certifications with distinction. After returning to India, she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, earning top honors and performance medals.
Her concert career began early, with a nationally telecast debut in Mumbai. Since then, she has performed widely across India and abroad, appearing at major music festivals, cultural institutions, and international platforms. She regularly performs both as a soloist and as part of The Flute Sisters and frequently accompanies her guru on stage, an honor that reflects her standing within the tradition.
Suchismita is a graded artist of All India Radio and has received several honors, including the Sur Mani title and the prestigious Rashtriya Pandit Kumar Gandharva Samman. She has also contributed music for television and cultural productions. Through performance, teaching, and dedication to lineage, Suchismita Chatterjee continues to carry forward the voice of the bansuri with discipline and clarity, representing a living link in the classical tradition.
