Biography
Souvik Chakraborty is an Indian classical Kathak dancer based in Kolkata, known for his refined technique and expressive stage presence. He began his early training in Kathak at the Padatik Dance Centre in Kolkata under the guidance of Pt. Vijai Shankar. His dedication to the art form led him to advanced training under the legendary Kathak maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj, with whom he studied for more than two decades. He has also received guidance from Guru Saswati Sen, further strengthening his grounding in the traditional Kathak repertoire.
Over the years, Souvik Chakraborty has developed a performance style that combines traditional Kathak compositions with contemporary presentation formats. He has presented his work at various classical dance festivals and cultural platforms, including events such as the Pt. Durgalal Festival and SRIJANOTSAV. His performances are noted for rhythmic precision, expressive storytelling, and a balance between traditional aesthetics and modern stage interpretation.
In addition to performing, Souvik Chakraborty is active as a teacher and choreographer. He conducts Kathak training and certified courses for students at institutions such as Anamika Kala Sangam in Kolkata. He has also collaborated with several classical dancers and artists, including Odissi dancer Madhusmita Mohanty and Kathak dancer Dr. Sucharita Datta Ghata, presenting duet and ensemble works. Alongside stage performances, he contributes to choreography and creative projects, including music videos and digital dance productions.
