Shrabani Biswas

Dr. Shrabani Biswas is an accomplished sitar artist from Varanasi whose musical foundation was shaped by early exposure to Indian classical music within her family environment, including inspiration drawn from her grandfather’s musical background. She began her formal sitar training at a young age under Shri Dyutikishore, which provided her with essential grounding in technique and discipline. Her advanced musical development took place under the rigorous guidance of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, a leading torchbearer of the Maihar Gharana and disciple of Baba Allauddin Khan, firmly placing her within this revered lineage.

Her professional career reflects a balance between performance and pedagogy. Between 1991 and 1994, she served as an assistant teacher at Banaras Hindu University, contributing to structured academic instruction in classical music. She later became a senior sitar instructor at the SPK Academy, founded by her guru, where she played an active role in nurturing advanced students. She continues her association with music education and performance at the Bharatratna Pandit Ravi Shankar Interpretation Centre under the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Varanasi.

Dr. Biswas has performed extensively across India, earning recognition for her expressive depth, tonal clarity, and adherence to classical aesthetics. As a teacher, she is known for her ability to bridge tradition with contemporary learning environments, guiding students in both India and the United States. Through sustained performance, dedicated teaching, and faithful representation of the Maihar Gharana, Dr. Shrabani Biswas remains a respected sitarist, educator, and cultural ambassador of Indian classical music.
