He is the grandson of Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan and has received training under his uncle, Ustad Murad Ali Khan. His musical activity is closely connected with the Saurang Parampara, a collective framework in which multiple sarangi players perform together under a shared stylistic approach.
He frequently performs as part of the Sarangi Ensemble led by Ustad Murad Ali Khan, appearing alongside family members and fellow practitioners such as Subhan Ali. His performances have been presented at platforms including the SaMaPa Music and Dance Festival and Nishi Ragini, organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
Shahnawaz Ali’s work is primarily oriented toward ensemble performance and the continuity of the Moradabad Gharana’s sarangi tradition. Through concert appearances and collaborative projects, he contributes to the preservation and contemporary presentation of this lineage-based style.
