Biography
Sawani Mudgal is a Hindustani classical vocalist associated with the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya tradition in New Delhi. She received her training under her father, Pt. Madhup Mudgal, and belongs to the lineage of Pt. Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya, founder of the institution.
She holds a master's degree in music from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, where she was awarded a gold medal. Alongside her academic training, she has completed advanced examinations under the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya system.
As a performing artist, Sawani Mudgal has presented concerts across India and internationally, including appearances in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Bhutan. Her work includes participation in festivals and collaborative productions that engage with Indian classical and cross-cultural formats, including projects such as “Flamenco-India.”
Her repertoire includes Hindustani classical and devotional music, with a thematic focus on compositions of saint-poets such as Kabir and Tulsidas. She has also contributed to recordings and independent musical releases.
In addition to performance, she is actively involved in teaching at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, where she conducts the Gandharva Baal Vrinda (children’s choir) and engages in music education initiatives. She has also been associated with cultural outreach platforms such as SPIC MACAY.
Sawani Mudgal continues to be part of a contemporary generation of musicians working within established classical traditions while participating in collaborative and educational projects.
