Madhup Mudgal

Madhup Mudgal is a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist known for his refined renditions of khayal and bhajan. Based in New Delhi, he represents a rich musical lineage and has contributed significantly as a performer, composer, and educator.

Born into a musical family, he is the son of Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi. Growing up in an environment frequented by eminent musicians, Mudgal received his early training from his father and later studied under stalwarts such as Vasant Thakar, Jasraj, and most notably Kumar Gandharva, whose influence shaped his artistic identity.

An accomplished academic, he holds advanced degrees from the University of Delhi, with research focused on the structure of khayal. Since 1995, he has served as principal of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, one of Delhi’s oldest and most respected music institutions, mentoring generations of musicians. He also conducts the Gandharva Choir and composes for productions by his sister, renowned Odissi dancer Madhavi Mudgal.

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018. Through performance and pedagogy, Madhup Mudgal continues to uphold and expand the traditions of Hindustani classical music.
