Biography

Sarwar Hussain Khan is a superb sarangi player and the grandson of the illustrious Ustad Abdul Latif Khan of Bhopal. Born into a family where music was a way of life, he absorbed the art naturally from an early age. His connection to tradition is not only through lineage but also through daily practice, discipline, and close learning under his grandfather’s guidance.

As a young boy, Sarwar already displayed remarkable skill. When a visiting student arrived in Bhopal in search of Abdul Latif Khan, Sarwar, then only thirteen, welcomed him with confidence, saying that although his grandfather was away, he himself played the sarangi and invited him in. What followed was a week of music that revealed Sarwar’s extraordinary technique and depth, even before his formal training had fully matured. Later, Abdul Latif Khan taught both students together, strengthening their bond as guru bhai and lifelong companions in music.

Over the years, Sarwar Hussain Khan evolved into a mature and sensitive artist. Since 2010, he has been employed as an accompanist at the prestigious Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, where he supports leading vocalists and instrumentalists. His playing is valued for its clarity, balance, and ability to mirror the emotional core of a raga.

Between 2009 and 2012, his role as a teacher was documented in the Growing into Music project, where he was filmed guiding his young sons, Amaan and Armaan, passing on the art with patience and care.

Through performance, accompaniment, and teaching, Sarwar Hussain Khan carries forward the living heritage of the sarangi. His journey stands as a bridge between generations, preserving the voice of his lineage while shaping its future.
