About
Biography
Pandit Sanjoy Adhikary is a respected tabla artist and a leading representative of the Benaras Gharana. He was trained in a rich musical lineage connected to Pandit Hari Charan Das of Varanasi and Acharya Bhagaban Das Sitari. He studied at Scottish Church College, Calcutta, and began his musical journey under Shri Ashish Roy Chowdhury. He later refined his art under Pandit Swapan Siva and Pandit Kumar Bose, absorbing the depth and strength of the Benaras style. He also received vocal accompaniment training from Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, which helped him understand melody and balance more deeply.
He is known for his strong command of laykari, rare tehai patterns, and clear, powerful sound. His artistry has been honored with the Taalashree Award by Patna Matriudghatan Samity and the International Excellence Award by Pragati Bangla Utsav.
Since 2011, he has been a musician on the faculty at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, guiding young artists. He is also associated with the Acharya Bhagaban Das Sitari Memorial Music School and has worked with platforms such as SPIC MACAY and other musical institutions.
Based in Kolkata, Pandit Sanjoy Adhikary continues to perform at major events in India and abroad. Married to Rini Adhikary, he leads a life dedicated to rhythm, learning, and the living tradition of the Benaras Gharana.
