Ravi Chary

Ravi Chary is an Indian sitarist, composer, and educator, recognised for his work in Hindustani classical music and cross-genre collaborations. Originally from Goa, he is noted as one of the first sitarists to emerge from the region, developing a style that blends traditional raga-based music with broader sonic influences. His musical foundation was shaped early on by his father, Pt: Prabhakar Chary, a tabla player and musicologist.

He later trained under Prof. Abdul Karim Khan and went on to study with Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan in Mumbai. He continues to receive guidance from Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, reflecting a lineage-based approach within the sitar tradition. As a soloist, Ravi Chary has performed at major music festivals in India and internationally, establishing a presence across classical and global music platforms.

In addition to performance, Ravi Chary has contributed as a composer and innovator, with works such as “Ravi Chary Crossing” and “Sitar Symphony.” His collaborations extend into world music, influenced in part by percussionist Trilok Gurtu. He has received recognition, including a fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, supporting his continued work in performance and composition.
