Rahul Deshpande

Rahul Deshpande is an accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist and actor whose work bridges classical music, semi-classical traditions, and Marathi musical theatre. Born in Pune on 10 October 1979, he belongs to a distinguished musical lineage as the grandson of Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande. His artistic formation has been shaped by deep engagement with the music of Kumar Gandharva and sustained training under Pandit Gangadharbuva Pimpalkhare, Dr. Madhusudan Patwardhan, Smt. Ushatai Chipalkatti, and Pandit Mukul Shivputra. He also trained in tabla under Pandit Suresh Samant, strengthening his rhythmic understanding.

Rahul’s repertoire encompasses khayal, tap khayal, dhrupad, thumri, kajri, hori, tappa, bhajan, abhanga, ghazal, bhavgeet, and natyasangeet. He is widely recognized for his contribution to Marathi musical theatre, particularly through the revival and reinterpretation of Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, originally associated with his grandfather. He portrayed the central role in the stage production and served as the playback voice for the film version, contributing significantly to its contemporary resonance. His work also includes revised presentations of Sangeet Maanapmaan and performances in Sangeet Sanshaykallol and Sangeet Saubhadra.

In addition to classical and theatrical performance, Rahul Deshpande regularly presents semi-classical programs featuring bhajans, thumris, dadras, and abhangas, and engages in collaborative and fusion projects with fellow musicians. He has served as a mentor and judge on prominent music platforms, including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs and Sangeet Samrat.

His film work in Me Vasantrao earned him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, along with multiple Filmfare, Zee Chitra Gaurav, and Maharashtra State Film Awards. He has also received honors such as the Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award, the Rasikagrani Dattopant Deshpande Award, and several recognitions for music direction and playback singing.

Rahul Deshpande curates the annual Vasantotsav in memory of Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande, sustaining a vital cultural tradition in Pune. Through performance, theater, recording, and pedagogy, he continues to expand the reach of Hindustani music while remaining anchored in its classical and theatrical heritage.
