Biography

Raghunandan Panshikar belongs to a musical family rooted in Sanskrit scholarship and classical arts; his father was the well-known Marathi theatre actor-producer Prabhakar Panshikar. This early immersion in culture and stagecraft laid the foundation for his life in music. Under the guidance of first Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni and then—from his late teens—under the tutelage of Kishori Amonkar (and her mother, Mogubai Kurdikar), he absorbed the aesthetic depth and technical precision characteristic of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. His training, spanning over two decades, equipped him with a refined vocal technique, rich meend and gamak, and nuanced taans.

What sets Panshikar apart is his versatility. Alongside classical raga renditions, he navigates semi-classical forms such as thumri, ghazal, bhajan, and natya sangeet, showcasing a wide emotional palette. His discography—released through labels including Saregama, Times Music, Sony Music, and his own imprint—reflects both classical rigor and spiritual or thematic explorations. He has composed music for theater, notably earning acclaim for direction in the musical drama Avgha Rang Ekachi Zala.

Panshikar’s performances have taken him across India and to international venues in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, bringing his voice to diverse audiences. He has been honored with multiple awards, such as the Manik Varma Puraskar, Upadhye Smriti Puraskar, Zee Gaurav Puraskar, Maharashtra Times Sanman, and Ramkrishnabua Vaze Puraskar—acknowledgments of his sustained contribution to Indian classical music. Through his recordings, concerts, and creative collaborations, Raghunandan Panshikar continues to uphold and evolve the legacy of the Jaipur-Atrauli vocal tradition in the contemporary era.
