Radha and Jayalakshmi were a Carnatic vocal duo known for concert performances, playback singing, and teaching, associated with the G. N. Balasubramaniam school and early duo singing tradition.

Biography

Radha (1932–28 September 2025) and Jayalakshmi (1932–27 May 2014), known as Radha Jayalakshmi, were a Carnatic vocal duo and playback singers active in the mid-20th century. Trained under G. N. Balasubramaniam, their style reflected his approach to raga exposition and composition.

They were among the early exponents of the vocal duet format in Carnatic music, performing widely across India. In addition to concert performances, Jayalakshmi contributed extensively as a playback singer in South Indian cinema across multiple languages.

Later in their careers, they focused on teaching and trained several students, including the Priya Sisters. The duo was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1981 for their contribution to Carnatic vocal music.
