Biography

Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar was born in 1934 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into the renowned Dagar family, one of the most important lineages in the history of Dhrupad. His father, vocalist Nasiruddin Khan, passed away in 1936, after which the responsibility of musical training fell to his elder brothers, Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Nasir Aminuddin Dagar. Under their guidance, he absorbed the rigorous discipline of Dagar vani Dhrupad, known for its slow, meditative alap, microtonal precision, and emphasis on raga purity.

His performing career developed mainly in Delhi. Together with his brother Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar, he formed the duo widely known as the Junior Dagar Brothers. Their jugalbandi presentations became noted for their tonal unity and contemplative depth. After the death of Nasir Moinuddin Dagar in 1967, this duo became the primary pair carrying forward the jugalbandi format within the Dagar tradition.

Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar was among the musicians who helped take Dhrupad to international audiences, performing in Europe, America, and Japan at a time when the genre had limited global visibility. In India, he was associated with efforts to popularize Dhrupad through the Dhrupad Society, which created platforms for artists from different gharanas and encouraged wider appreciation of the form.

As a teacher, he contributed to the transmission of the tradition to the next generation. His son, Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, later became an important Dhrupad vocalist, continuing the family lineage.

Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar passed away in 1989. He is remembered as a significant custodian of the Dagar bani, active during a period when Dhrupad was regaining recognition on both Indian and international stages.
