Mogubai Kurdikar

Mogubai Kurdikar (1904–2001) was a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist of the Jaipur–Atrauli gharana, revered for her depth, restraint, and uncompromising classicism. Born in Kurdi village in Portuguese-era Goa, she was introduced to music early by her mother, Jayashreebai, a locally respected singer. Her early years included exposure to temple music and sangeet natak, where she gained stage experience and received initial training in music, Kathak, and ghazal.

A decisive turning point came in Sangli, where she encountered Ustad Alladiya Khan. Despite political and social obstacles that repeatedly interrupted her training, she persevered with exceptional resolve. After periods of study with Bashir Hussain Khan and brief instruction from Vilayat Hussain Khan, she ultimately formalized her discipleship under Alladiya Khan in 1934 and trained with him until he died in 1946. This rigorous tutelage shaped her into a leading representative of Jaipur–Atrauli gayaki.

From the 1940s onward, Mogubai Kurdikar gained prominence through concerts across India and broadcasts on All India Radio. Her singing was characterised by measured tempos, subtlety, and strict adherence to raga grammar. She consciously avoided lighter forms such as thumri and natya sangeet, maintaining a purist concert repertoire that reinforced her stature within classical circles.

Beyond performance, she was an influential teacher and composer. She composed several khayals that became part of the Jaipur–Atrauli repertoire and trained a wide circle of disciples. Her most celebrated disciple was her daughter, Kishori Amonkar, who carried forward and reinterpreted the tradition. Mogubai Kurdikar’s role in establishing a strong lineage of women vocalists remains one of her most enduring contributions.

Despite facing gender-based discrimination and professional hardship, she achieved wide recognition and respect. Her honors include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan, and she is remembered by the honorific title “Gaan Tapasvini.” Annual festivals and awards held in her memory continue to commemorate her legacy as one of the great custodians of the Jaipur–Atrauli gharana.
