Biography

Mithilesh Kumar Jha is a distinguished Hindustani classical tabla artist and an eminent representative of the Benaras Gharana. Born in Patna, Bihar, he began his musical journey under the guidance of his father, Gopikant Jha, before receiving advanced training from the noted tabla guru, Pandit Bulbul Maharaj. His rhythmic style reflects the powerful tonal clarity, intricate layakari, and dynamic compositions characteristic of the Benaras tradition.

Over the course of his career, Pandit Mithilesh Kumar Jha has established himself as a highly respected tabla accompanist and solo performer, sharing the stage with leading figures of Indian classical music, including Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Parveen Sultana, and Girija Devi. His performances have been featured at major classical music festivals such as the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, Taj Mahotsav, and the ITC Sangeet Sammelan, where his command over complex rhythmic cycles and expressive accompaniment has earned wide acclaim.

Apart from live performances, Jha has also contributed to music in film and television, appearing in productions such as Khamosh Pani and The Dance of the Beat, as well as on national broadcasts including the DD Morning Show. He is the founder of The Shruti Foundation, an initiative dedicated to supporting and mentoring young musicians through the traditional guru–shishya parampara. He continues to teach and promote tabla education while preserving the rich heritage of the Benaras Gharana.
