Biography

Mickey Hart is an American drummer and percussionist whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, he developed an early interest in drumming and studied rudimental percussion from a young age. After serving as a drummer in the United States Air Force band system in the early 1960s, he entered the professional music scene with a strong technical foundation and a growing curiosity about global rhythm traditions.

Hart joined the Grateful Dead in 1967, becoming one of the band’s two drummers alongside Bill Kreutzmann. Their paired drumming approach became a defining element of the group’s sound, earning them the nickname “the rhythm devils.” Hart was part of the band during its most influential years and returned after a brief departure to remain with the group until its dissolution in 1995. He later continued related projects with ensembles such as Dead & Company, The Other Ones, and Rhythm Devils.

Parallel to his rock career, Hart developed a deep interest in world percussion and ethnomusicology. He collaborated with musicians from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and worked with cultural institutions, including the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution, on sound preservation and documentation. He has served on advisory and preservation boards focused on safeguarding historical recordings and traditional music.

In 1991, Hart released Planet Drum, a percussion-focused project featuring international artists. The album topped the Billboard World Music chart and earned the first-ever Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. This project helped broaden the visibility of global percussion in mainstream music contexts.

Hart has also explored connections between rhythm, science, and healing. Projects such as Rhythms of the Universe translated astrophysical data into musical form, while his involvement with the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function reflects an interest in music therapy and neuroscience. As an author, he has written books on percussion history and the cultural role of rhythm.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart is widely regarded as a musician who expanded the role of percussion beyond timekeeping into a global and conceptual art form. His work connects performance, research, and cultural preservation, making him a notable figure in the dialogue between Western popular music and world rhythm traditions.
