Mashkoor Ali Khan

Mashkoor Ali Khan is a highly respected Hindustani classical vocalist from India, known for his deep-rooted connection to the Kirana gharana, one of the most prominent traditions in Indian classical music. He was born on 27 February 1957 and belongs to a distinguished musical lineage. He is the grandson of Abdul Karim Khan, one of the founding figures of the Kirana style, and the grandnephew of Abdul Wahid Khan. 

Mashkoor Ali Khan received his early musical training from his father, Shakoor Khan, who was a skilled sarangi player. Growing up in such a rich musical environment, he developed a deep understanding of ragas, voice culture, and the aesthetics of Hindustani classical music. His training followed the traditional guru-shishya parampara, which emphasizes close guidance and years of dedicated practice. 

He is best known for his mastery of the khayal style of singing, which is the most prominent form of Hindustani classical vocal music. His singing is marked by a powerful voice, intricate melodic patterns, and a slow, detailed development of ragas. He pays special attention to vilambit (slow tempo) compositions, where he explores the emotional and spiritual depth of a raga with great sensitivity. His performances often highlight rare ragas and unique bandishes (compositions), making his music both traditional and distinctive. 

Apart from being a performer, Mashkoor Ali Khan is also an eminent teacher. He is associated with the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, where he serves as a senior faculty member. This institution is one of the leading centers for the training and promotion of Indian classical music. Through his teaching, he has trained many students, including his nephews Amjad Ali Khan and Arshad Ali Khan, as well as international musicians. 

Mashkoor Ali Khan has also made significant contributions to musicology. He has collected and preserved a vast archive of rare and traditional bandishes, many of which have been passed down through generations of the Kirana gharana. This effort has played an important role in safeguarding India’s musical heritage. 

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and honors for his contribution to classical music. One of his most notable recognitions is the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2015), one of India’s highest honors in the performing arts. He has also received several other awards from cultural organizations for his excellence in music.
