Marvin Sewell

Marvin Sewell is an American guitarist whose work spans blues and jazz traditions. Born and raised in Chicago, he studied at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University, where he developed a formal foundation in music. Since 1990, he has been based in New York City, working actively as a performer, recording artist, and ensemble leader.

Sewell is widely recognized as a collaborator. He has worked extensively with major jazz artists, including Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Lizz Wright, and Jason Moran. His association with Cassandra Wilson includes appearances on multiple recordings and participation in Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: A Musical Journey, a 2003 PBS documentary series exploring blues history.

Alongside his role as a sideman, Sewell leads his own ensemble, the Marvin Sewell Group, through which he presents original work. His album The Worker’s Dance (2005) documents his approach as a leader, combining groove-oriented structures with jazz improvisation.
