About

Marcus Gilmore, Grammy-winning American jazz drummer, blends rhythmic innovation with cross-genre work, shaping modern jazz as a key collaborator.

Biography

Marcus Gilmore (born October 10, 1986) is a New York–based jazz drummer who has built an international reputation for technical command, rhythmic imagination, and stylistic range. A graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, he later earned full-scholarship offers from both Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. He began touring professionally at the age of sixteen, entering the professional scene early.

Gilmore attracted early critical attention for his fresh approach to the drum set. A New York Times critic noted his ability to rethink jazz drumming and credited him with generating strong interest on the New York club circuit. He was also selected as a protégé in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé initiative, reflecting recognition from the wider arts community.

He has performed or recorded with a broad spectrum of major artists, including Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Vijay Iyer, Zakir Hussain, Robert Glasper, Brad Mehldau, Pharoah Sanders, Common, Norah Jones, and Roy Hargrove, among many others. His work spans straight-ahead jazz, contemporary improvisation, R&B, hip-hop, and orchestral projects.

Beyond live performance and recordings, Gilmore has contributed to film and orchestral music. He was a primary contributor to the soundtrack of the Disney-Pixar film Soul (2020). He was also commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra to compose an orchestral work, first presented in 2020 and later premiered in full in New York in 2023.

His honors include a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for Antidote as part of Chick Corea’s band. DownBeat magazine named him among its “25 for the Future” in 2016, highlighting his influence on the next generation of jazz artists. He appeared on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine in 2019.

As a bandleader, Gilmore has steadily developed his own artistic voice. His album Journey to the New: Live at the Village Vanguard reached the top position on The New York Times Best Jazz Albums list in 2025. He also received a Grammy nomination for his work on Sullivan Fortner’s Southern Nights.

Musically, Gilmore draws from a wide lineage of drummers, including his grandfather Roy Haynes. He has cited influences such as Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, and Milford Graves, particularly appreciating non-metric, language-like rhythmic expression.

Overall, Marcus Gilmore is regarded as a leading figure in contemporary jazz drumming, noted for blending tradition with forward-looking rhythmic ideas and for maintaining an active presence across genres and formats.
