Latif Ahmed Khan

Ustad Latif Ahmed Khan was a distinguished tabla player of the Delhi Gharana and one of the respected percussionists of twentieth-century Hindustani classical music. Born in 1941, he belonged to a family deeply connected with the rich traditions of Indian classical rhythm. From an early age, he displayed a natural attraction to music and rhythm, which eventually shaped his life as a dedicated tabla artist. His musical upbringing in Delhi exposed him to an environment where classical music was highly valued, allowing him to develop strong foundations in rhythm and performance.

Latif Ahmed Khan trained under some of the most important masters of the Delhi Gharana, including the legendary Ustad Gamay Khan and Ustad Inam Ali Khan. These gurus were leading representatives of one of the oldest tabla traditions in India. The Delhi Gharana is known for clarity of sound, purity of bols, and refined hand techniques. Under their guidance, Latif Ahmed Khan absorbed the intricate grammar of tabla playing and mastered the delicate balance between technical precision and expressive performance. His training was strict and traditional, involving years of practice and close observation of his teachers. 

As a performer, Ustad Latif Ahmed Khan became known for his clean execution, balanced rhythm, and command over complex compositions. He passed away in 1990, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of Hindustani classical music. Today, Ustad Latif Ahmed Khan is remembered as a dedicated tabla maestro whose artistry reflected discipline, elegance, and deep respect for tradition.
