Biography
Latha Ramachar occupies a distinguished place in Carnatic percussion as one of the few women to specialize in the Kanjira at the highest professional level. Born into a musical lineage, she received rigorous training from her father, the renowned Kanjira exponent H. P. Ramachar, whose discipline and artistry shaped her musical foundation from an early age.
Her playing is marked by rhythmic clarity, tonal control, and an acute sensitivity to the nuances of accompaniment. These qualities have made her a sought-after artist for leading Carnatic performers. Over the course of her career, she has shared the concert platform with legendary musicians such as M. S. Subbulakshmi, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, M. L. Vasantha Kumari, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and Dr. L. Subramaniam.
An “A” grade artist of All India Radio, Latha Ramachar has maintained a sustained presence on major concert stages and broadcast platforms. Her artistry is also documented through recordings and percussion-based projects, including collaborations with Dr. L. Subramaniam and Anuradha Pal, reflecting her versatility across classical and cross-genre contexts.
Her contributions have been formally recognized through honors such as the Yuva Kala Bharathi award. Continuing to perform at prestigious venues and festivals, Latha Ramachar remains a significant figure in Carnatic percussion, representing both artistic continuity and the evolving role of women in rhythm traditions.
