Biography
Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya is a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Born on 2 July 1978 in Coimbatore, she trained under the guidance of the renowned Bharatanatyam exponent Chitra Visweswaran at the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts. Recognized as one of the prominent dancers of her generation, her performances reflect a balance between classical discipline and creative interpretation within the Bharatanatyam tradition.
Over the course of her career, Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya has performed at several major dance festivals and cultural platforms across India, including the Soorya Festival, Konark Festival, Mahabalipuram Festival, Kinkini Festival, ICCR’s Horizon Festival, and programs organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. She has also toured internationally, presenting Bharatanatyam recitals and collaborative productions in countries such as the United States, Australia, Sri Lanka, and France. In addition to performing, she has participated in numerous productions choreographed by her guru and has created thematic works of her own, including productions such as Kodhai Alwar.
Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya has received several recognitions for her work in Bharatanatyam, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2013–2014) from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Rohini Krishna Award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, the Yuva Kala Bharati Award from Bharat Kalachar, and the Natya Kala Rathna from Rasika Ranjani Sabha. She is also the founder of the Pravaaha Centre for Movement in Chennai, where she mentors students and conducts workshops. Trained in the Vazhuvoor bani of Bharatanatyam, her work is noted for its graceful movement vocabulary, rhythmic clarity, and exploration of narrative themes within classical dance.
