Kaviraj

Born in the United Kingdom into a family closely connected with Indian classical music, Kaviraj Singh was exposed to the art form from an early age. His father, Dharambir Singh, a respected sitarist trained in the lineage of Ustad Vilayat Khan, played a formative role in shaping his musical foundation and sensitivity to raga-based expression.

Kaviraj’s primary instrumental training has been in the santoor, under the long-term guidance of Harjinderpal Singh, a senior disciple of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. This training established a strong grounding in layakari, tonal balance, and the melodic possibilities of the instrument. Alongside this, Kaviraj pursued serious vocal training with Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, which refined his understanding of raga development, phrasing, and improvisation.

Equally fluent in instrumental and vocal presentation, Kaviraj has developed a personal style that integrates santoor textures with vocal thinking. His performances are marked by clarity, emotional depth, and a strong sense of structure, shaped by regular travel to India for advanced study and artistic immersion.

He has collaborated with contemporary musicians such as Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney, reflecting an openness to dialogue beyond strict classical settings. Kaviraj Singh has appeared multiple times at the Darbar Festival, including performances in 2006, 2008, and 2015, leaving a lasting impression through his thoughtful musicianship. Despite being based in Europe, he remains deeply connected to Indian classical traditions while bringing a modern, cross-cultural perspective to his work.
