Biography
Kartik Ram Ji was a titan of the Raigarh Gharana, a specialized school of Kathak that flourished under the visionary patronage of Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh. Born in the early 20th century in the Bhanwarmal village of Chhattisgarh, Kartik Ram’s journey from a rural folk artist to a court dancer redefined the technical and expressive boundaries of Kathak. Alongside his lifelong creative partner, Pt. Kalyan Das, he became one of the "two pillars" of the Raigarh style, blending athletic vigor with rhythmic complexity.
His association with Raja Chakradhar Singh was the turning point of his career. The Raja, a percussionist and scholar himself, sought to create a unique dance aesthetic that merged the grace of Lucknow with the rhythmic power of Jaipur. Kartik Ram became the primary vessel for this experimentation. He was known for his extraordinary command over Layakari (rhythmic play) and his ability to execute incredibly fast, crisp footwork without losing clarity. Under the Raja's tutelage, he mastered complex compositions known as Kavit Chhand and Parans, which are still hallmark features of the Raigarh repertoire today.
What set Kartik Ram Ji apart was his versatility. While he was a master of the Tandava (vigorous) aspect of dance, he was equally adept at Abhinaya (expressive storytelling). He had a unique ability to translate the poetic nuances of Brij Bhasha into physical movements that were both subtle and impactful. His performances were often described as seamless transitions between the thunderous sounds of the Pakhawaj and the delicate tinkling of ghungroos.
Beyond his technical prowess, Kartik Ram Ji’s legacy lives on through his role as a guru. After the era of princely states ended, he dedicated his life to preserving the Raigarh Gharana, which might have otherwise faded into obscurity. He taught at the Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh, where he mentored a new generation of dancers, ensuring that the specific compositions and "bols" (rhythmic syllables) of Raigarh were documented and performed.
Today, Kartik Ram Ji is remembered not just as a dancer, but as a cultural architect. He successfully bridged the gap between traditional folk sensibilities and the rigorous demands of classical court dance. His contributions earned him numerous accolades and established the Raigarh Gharana as a distinct and respected branch of Kathak. His life stands as a testament to the power of dedicated mentorship and the enduring beauty of Indian classical arts.
