Kamalesh Maitra

Kamalesh Maitra was a pioneering force in Indian classical and world music, whose artistic vision transformed the perception of percussion as a melodic medium. Born on 28 April 1928 in Tangail, East Bengal, he did not come from a traditional musical lineage, yet he showed an early inclination toward rhythm. Growing up in Kolkata, he absorbed both Indian and European cultural influences and began learning various hand drums, including the tabla, during his formative years.

A decisive turn in his career came in 1950 when he joined Uday Shankar’s legendary ballet and dance company as its master drummer. It was here that Kamalesh Maitra took up the tabla tarang—an array of individually tuned tablas arranged to produce melody as well as rhythm. Through years of experimentation and disciplined practice, he elevated this rare instrument to concert status. He later became the musical director of the troupe, composing and directing music for numerous stage productions and touring internationally for over two decades.

Alongside his percussion work, Kamalesh Maitra pursued advanced training on the sarod under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, deepening his understanding of raga and melodic structure. In 1974, he was selected by Pandit Ravi Shankar to participate in the landmark Music Festival from India, later touring North America with George Harrison. These collaborations brought him into contact with leading Western jazz and world-music musicians, further expanding his musical language.

After settling in Berlin in 1977, Kamalesh Maitra devoted himself to teaching, composition, and cross-cultural collaboration. In 1980, he founded the Ragatala Ensemble, an innovative orchestra that fused Indian classical music with European classical forms, jazz, and contemporary sounds. His recordings, particularly Tabla Tarang—Melody on Drums, were widely acclaimed and are regarded as milestones in world music discography.

Until his passing in 2005, Kamalesh Maitra continued to perform, teach, and compose in Germany, leaving behind a singular legacy as a visionary artist. Remembered as the “last master of the tabla tarang,” his work stands as a bridge between rhythm and melody, tradition and innovation.
