Biography
Jayateerth Kulkarni is an Indian Hindustani classical flautist (bansuri player) and an ‘A’ Grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Born in Gulbarga in North Karnataka, he began learning the bansuri at the age of nineteen and gradually developed a deep engagement with Hindustani classical music. He completed his formal training in Hindustani Classical Flute as a senior-level student from the Karnataka Secondary Education Board in 2013 and has since pursued a professional career as a performing musician and educator.
His musical training includes guidance from several distinguished gurus. He initially trained under Ustad Shaikh Abdullah Khaji of the Kirana Gharana, a disciple of Vidushi Gangubai Hangal, where he developed his grounding in the gayaki anga approach to instrumental performance. He further studied tantrakari and gatkari under sitar maestro Ustad Shafique Khan of Dharwad and learned aspects of the Carnatic rhythmic system from Vidwan Jayachandra Kulur. He currently continues his advanced training under the noted bansuri maestro Pandit Rupak Kulkarni.
As a performer, Jayateerth Kulkarni presents solo Hindustani classical flute recitals and has also participated in jugalbandi performances with instruments such as sitar, violin, and harmonium. His performances have been featured at concerts organized by institutions including the Infosys Foundation and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and he has also presented concerts internationally, including performances in Muscat, Oman. In addition to performing, he serves as an assistant professor in the MA Music program at Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth University in Pune, contributing to the teaching and dissemination of Indian classical music.
