Biography
Janani Murali is an Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, researcher, and arts writer known for her work across traditional and contemporary performance contexts. Born into an artistic family and raised in a dance-oriented environment, she began her training at a young age and made her professional debut in 1998. Over the years, she has engaged with Bharatanatyam through multiple roles, including solo and ensemble performer, educator, and researcher, developing an approach that emphasizes a holistic understanding of the performing arts.
She currently serves as the Associate Director of the Padmalaya Dance Foundation, continuing the vision of its founder—her mother—by promoting dance education, performance, and academic engagement. Janani Murali is an A-grade artist of Doordarshan and an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Her contributions to Bharatanatyam have been recognized with several honors, including the Kalayogi Prashasti, Prateeksha Award, Narthana Shironmani, Padmavathi Puraskar, and Nalanda Nrithya Nipuna.
Janani’s artistic work often draws inspiration from Indian storytelling traditions, mythology, and social narratives. Her choreographic productions include works such as Savitri, When Kabir Met Quartet, Under the Banyan Tree, and Song and Story, which have been presented to audiences internationally. She has also created full-length dance-theatre productions, including Kalpavruksha, A Goddess’s Dream, and A Man and His Shadow, exploring connections between Indic philosophical ideas and contemporary social themes. Her experimental initiative UNBOXED has further expanded her practice into interdisciplinary performance and creative research, reflecting her continued exploration of classical dance within evolving artistic contexts.
