Biography

Indradeep Ghosh is a renowned Indian classical violinist and violist, associated with the Maihar gharana of Hindustani classical music. Born in Kolkata in a music-loving family, he started learning violin at the early age of six. His initial training was under Anamitra Mustafi, and later he received guidance from eminent gurus like Sisirkana Dhar Choudhury and V. G. Jog, which helped shape his strong foundation in classical music.

Indradeep Ghosh is often called the “Prince of Violin” and is known for his innovative approach. He is one of the few Indian musicians who plays a specially designed five-string violin and viola with sympathetic strings, inspired by the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. This unique instrument gives his music a rich and resonant sound. His style beautifully blends gayaki (vocal style) and tantrakari (instrumental style), along with influences from Western and Middle Eastern music.

Over the years, he has performed extensively across India and internationally, including major festivals in Europe and the United States such as SXSW (USA), LearnQuest Music Festival (Boston), and Festival Du Bout Du Monde (France). He has collaborated with many global artists like Mamadou Diabaté, Tony Monaco, and Pedro Eustache, showcasing his versatility in both classical and fusion music. He is also an “A” grade artist of All India Radio and has released several albums, including a unique viola album titled Tribute to Miyan Tansen

Apart from performing, Indradeep Ghosh is also a composer and educator. He has created new ragas such as Ganapati and Indradhanush, which gained appreciation among music lovers. He serves as an Artistic Director at Global Creative Arts Academy in the USA and has been honored internationally for promoting Indian classical music, including recognition by the City of Houston. His work continues to contribute significantly to the global spread of Indian classical violin.
