Harish Raghavan

Harish Raghavan (born May 19, 1982, in Northbrook, Illinois) is an Indian American upright bassist whose work connects modern jazz practice with aspects of Indian musical heritage. His first instrument was the mridangam, a South Indian percussion instrument, before he shifted to the upright bass at age sixteen. This early exposure to rhythm-based traditions continues to inform his musical approach.

Raghavan studied at the University of Southern California, where he completed a Bachelor of Music degree under the guidance of noted bassists and educators John Clayton, Dave Carpenter, and Robert Hurst. In 2009, he was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Jazz Bass Competition, an early recognition of his potential on the global jazz stage.

Since becoming active professionally around 2006, Raghavan has developed a steady presence in contemporary jazz. He has been a regular collaborator with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and drummer Eric Harland, contributing to multiple acclaimed recordings and tours. Other collaborators have included Vijay Iyer, Gerald Clayton, Taylor Eigsti, Logan Richardson, and Walter Smith III. Through these associations, he has been part of projects that emphasize original composition and modern ensemble interplay.

After more than a decade as a sideman, Raghavan released his debut album as a leader, Calls for Action (2019), on Whirlwind Recordings. The album presented his work as a composer, featuring a set of original pieces structured as a cohesive musical statement. He followed this with In Tense (2022), further establishing his voice as a bandleader.

Alongside performing and recording, Raghavan is active as an educator. He has taught at programs such as the Stanford Jazz Workshop, The New School, Siena Jazz Workshop, Banff workshops, and Centrum Jazz Workshop. His teaching reflects his interest in mentorship and knowledge-sharing within the jazz community.
