Biography
Hariharan Anantha Subramani is a celebrated Indian vocalist whose career spans over four decades across Indian classical music, ghazals, devotional repertoire, playback singing, and fusion. Born into a family of Carnatic musicians in Mumbai, he received his early musical grounding from his parents, which shaped his strong command over classical aesthetics, voice culture, and musical discipline.
He began his professional journey through concerts and television performances before establishing himself in Indian cinema. His entry into film music gained national attention with his debut song that earned him major awards, followed by a long and fruitful association with leading composers, most notably A. R. Rahman. Over the years, Hariharan has lent his voice to hundreds of acclaimed film songs across Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, and other languages, becoming one of the most trusted and expressive playback singers in Indian cinema.
Alongside film music, Hariharan is widely regarded as one of the foremost ghazal singers of his generation, with numerous landmark albums to his credit. His ghazal recordings are admired for their lyrical sensitivity, melodic depth, and emotional restraint. In 1996, he co-founded the fusion band Colonial Cousins with composer Leslie Lewis, pioneering a new sound that blended Indian classical elements with global contemporary music. The group achieved international recognition and set a benchmark for Indian fusion music.
Hariharan’s contribution to Indian music has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, multiple National Film Awards, and several state and industry recognitions. Beyond recordings and concerts, he has also served as a mentor and judge on major music platforms, continuing to influence younger generations. With his ability to move seamlessly between classical tradition and modern expression, Hariharan remains a towering figure in Indian music.
