Biography

Gurumurthy Vaidya belongs to a musically rich lineage and comes from Yallapura in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, a region known for its cultural depth. His early exposure to the complex rhythmic patterns of Yakshagana shaped his understanding of rhythm from childhood. He began learning tabla at the age of twelve under Pandit G. G. Hegde and later trained with Pandit Basavaraj Bendigere of Dharwad. His advanced guidance came from the legendary Pandit Ravindra Yavagal, under whom he continues to refine his art.

A graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Gurumurthy has performed across India and abroad, including platforms such as the Sawai Gandharva Festival, Vishnu Digambar Paluskar Sangeeth Sabha, and festivals in the USA, Muscat, Dubai, and Bahrain. He has accompanied artists such as Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Pandita N. Rajam, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, and Pt. Brijbhushan Kabra.

He is known for presenting Laya Vinyasa, an ensemble combining tabla, pakhawaj, Yakshagana maddale, and chende. Alongside performance, he composes for recordings, participates in seminars, and trains students through the guru–shishya tradition.
